Total Time 13 minutes
Servings 1 sandwich

Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter softened
  • 3 slices cheese
  • Pinch of salt optional

Instructions

  • Soften the butter at room temperature.
  • Lay out two slices of bread.
  • Spread butter on one side of each slice all the way to the edges.
  • Place one slice butter-side down in a cold pan.
  • Add cheese slices on top of the bread.
  • Place second slice on top with butter-side up.
  • Turn heat to medium-low.
  • Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown.
  • Flip carefully with a spatula. Press down gently.
  • Cook the other side for 3 to 4 minutes until golden.
  • Remove from pan. Let rest for 1 minute.
  • Cut diagonally and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use softened butter — hard butter tears the bread
  • Butter all the way to the edges for even browning
  • Start with a cold pan and heat slowly
  • Use medium-low heat — high heat burns the bread
  • Cook 3 to 4 minutes per side
  • Let rest 1 minute before cutting so cheese stays inside
  • Cover with a lid if cheese is not melting fast enough
  • Best served fresh — do not make ahead or freeze
